Aeromass is a privately-owned airline based in Nantucket and the biggest rival of Sandpiper Air. Publically, the business appeared to be the antithesis of Sandpiper. Whereas Sandpiper was a smaller operation, it had a better safety record and was more efficiently managed. Owned and managed by Roy Biggins, it was a six-plane franchise (later seven) and was constantly taking passengers from Sandpiper Air due to mechanical problems and other distractions or just out of Roy's efforts to intimidate his competition. There is substantial evidence Roy used multiple means to cut costs to make more money, such as making tofu the flight meal and even kicking off passengers for other passengers with more money to spend. When passengers bartered for seats, Roy was not against taking the highest bids. Brian Hackett was constantly mocking and ribbing Roy by implying he ran the company with other questionable methods, such as hiring inexperienced pilots and getting rid of the life vests. In addition to Brian, Helen Chapel once tried needling Roy into hiring a female pilot, but Roy ignored her request. Roy's only known named employee was Katie, his female counter agent, but it is likely she was often taken for granted, Roy once taking her to give blood against her will.
Another aspect to Aeromass was the fact things almost always seemed to go in its favor, only to unpredictably crash afterward. When Joe invited Davis Lynch to Nantucket to consider becoming an investor, but Lynch turned out to be actually more impressed with Roy and ended up becoming a minority owner in Aeromass. Yet another underhanded method of Roy's business schemes was to get "Ace" Galvin to endorse Aeromass as they were shared similar iniquities. Although Ace Galvin had a great public persona, he had originally been wooed by Brian to endorse Sandpiper. Roy gloated that this was going to be the end of Sandpiper as he had spent a lot on advertising on Galvin's name affixed to Aeromass. However, Galvin was also fairly obnoxious, and this scheme ended up backfiring when Galvin was arrested in Washington D.C. for drunk and lewd conduct, resulting in Aeromass being affiliated with the fallout and bad publicity.
