George DeVay (sometimes called "George #2" or "Second George") was Fay Cochran's second husband. He was played by Richard Balin.
Bio[]
George DeVay met Fay Evelyn Dumbly when he was in the military and she was dancing with the USO (There Once Was a Girl From Nantucket).
When Fay and George married, they had a small, intimate wedding (Let's Call the Whole Thing Off). When George moved in with Fay, he turned her sewing room into his den (Sleepless in Nantucket). During their marriage, George apparently had an affair with the neighbor and fathered a child (or possibly children) with her (Honey, We Broke the Kid).
After his death, George was cremated and entombed in vault on Nantucket (but in a different cemetery than George Dumbly, Fay's first husband) (Exit Laughing, Bye, George, and Joe Blows (Part 1)).
In Fay There, Georgy Girl, after Fay sold their old belongings, all three of her Georges began haunting her demanding that she get their stuff back. Fay initially went along with their demands, but eventually realized that even though she still loved them all, she couldn't continue to live in the past.
Trivia[]
- In Love Is Like Pulling Teeth, Fay admits that she didn't like her second husband very much. Neither did her pet dachshund that she let sleep at the foot of her bed.
- George was a fanatic about being on time. Fay still finds it funny to refer to him as her "late husband".
- In Exit Laughing, Fay talks about George's annoying habit of flicking his cigar ashes all around. Upon discussing this trait, she mentioned she had him cremated so that now he has to use an ashtray.
- In Joe Blows, Fay reveals that her both first and second husbands are buried on Nantucket but in different cemeteries.
- Later, in Bye, George, Fay revealed that this George was entombed in a vault above ground.
- In The Shrink, while discussing June weddings, Fay revealed that she held funerals for two of her husbands in the month of June. Since George the Third was cremated and his ashes with spread in December 1990, this George and George Dumbly would be the two with June funerals.
- When discussing insurance payouts with Joe in She's Gotta Have It, Fay states that she got big life insurance checks after the death of each of her husbands, and when she got her first insurance check, she went out and bought a new mink coat, which she had to sell a week later because George had not paid taxes since 1963. However, in Fay There, Georgy Girl, Fay states that her first husband died in 1959.
- This is possibly a continuity error, or Fay misspoke/misremembered and was actually referring to her second husband. There is precedence for her confusing details about her Georges.
- Fay also implies whichever George didn't pay those taxes is now burning in hell.
- In Fay There, Georgy Girl, this character is credited simply as "George #2".
