George Dumbly was Fay Cochran's first husband. He was played by Matt Gottlieb.
Bio[]
George Dumbly met Fay Evelyn Schlob when he was in the military and she was dancing with the USO (There Once Was a Girl From Nantucket). While they were together, they shared a wonderful, romantic bogalo in Niagara Falls, where George bought a souvenir ashtray (Fay There, Georgy Girl).
When Fay and George married, they had a large, formal wedding (Let's Call the Whole Thing Off).
For a time, George was a boxer and Fay was his corner man. She didn't mind the language, but hated the spitting. Eventually, George became a dentist. Because he refused to ever wear the lead apron, he became sterile (Honey, We Broke the Kid).
George died in 1959 (Fay There, Georgy Girl) when he was hit by a bus (Terminal Jealousy) or a truck (Murder, She Roast). A week and a half before he was hit, George had just recovered from breaking "his ass" (Terminal Jealousy). He was buried on Nantucket (Joe Blows (Part 1)).
After he died, Fay turned his den into her sewing room (Sleepless in Nantucket).
In Fay There, Georgy Girl, after Fay sold their old belongs, all three of her Georges began haunting her demanding that she get their stuff back. Fay initially went along with their demands, but eventually realized that even though she still loved them all, she couldn't continue to live in the past.
Trivia[]
- In Fay There, Georgy Girl, George's ghost is constantly smoking cigarettes.
- George once broke his ass (Terminal Jealousy).
- In Joe Blows (Part 1), Fay reveals that her both first and second husbands are buried on Nantucket, but in different cemeteries.
- When discussing insurance payouts with Joe in She's Gotta Have It, Fay states that she got big life insurance checks after the death of each of her husbands, and when she got her first insurance check, she went out and bought a new mink coat, which she had to sell a week later because George had not paid taxes since 1963. However, in Fay There, Georgy Girl, Fay states that her first husband died in 1959.
- This is possibly a continuity error, or Fay misspoke/misremembered and was actually referring to her second husband. There is precedence for her confusing details about her Georges.
- Fay also implies whichever George didn't pay those taxes is now burning in hell.
- In The Shrink, while discussing June weddings, Fay revealed that she buried two of her husbands in the month of June. Since George the Third was cremated and his ashes with spread in December 1990, this George and George DeVay were the two buried in June.
- In Fay There, Georgy Girl, this character is credited simply as "George #1".
