Synopsis[]

Joe arrives at the airport after a routine flight to Boston, but informs Helen that he forgot to pick up their monogrammed towels while there. With business slow at the lunch counter and at Sandpiper, Joe and Helen plan to have sex in Joe's office, as soon as Helen gets rid of Roy, who just sat at the counter. Unfortunately, Roy is very indecisive about what to order. Over ten minutes later, Roy finally decides that he's not hungry and leaves. Finally free, Helen tries to escape to Joe's office, but is stopped by Casey, who just read in the newspaper that Davis Lynch was recently freed from his house arrest in Rangoon. Helen immediately tries to book a flight on Aeromass's next flight to New York, but before she can, Antonio arrives with a message for from Davis that be picked up while at the Western Union informing her that Davis is coming to Nantucket. Ominously, Helen will not provide any details. Helen rushes into Joe's office and demands that he fly back to Boston to get their monogrammed towels immediately. Joe is disappointed not to be having sex and annoyed that Helen needs the towels now, but Helen insists. As Joe prepares to leave, Brian offers to go to Boston for him, but Helen demands that it be Joe and pushes him out the doors onto the tarmac. Frantically, Helen tries to figure out what to do. When confronted by Antonio, Brian, Casey, and Roy, Helen finally admits that she never end thing with Davis and he's now coming to Nantucket to marry her.

Sitting at the lunch counter, Helen describe what happened the night she and Joe got engaged (seen in Whose Wife Is It Anyway?). In a flashback, after arriving at Davis floor, Helen asks Joe to wait while she speaks with Davis alone. Helen briefly practices what she's going to say to Davis, but once inside his apartment she is bombard with his excitement, dual violinists playing "Isn't It Romantic?", and a message on the electronic billboard in Times Square. As she attempts to break up with him again, she is surprised by Davis's family who arrived to celebrate their engagement. Davis introduces Helen to his mother and grandmother. Then gives Helen his grandmother's 6.5 carat diamond engagement ring (though she is loathed to part with it). Davis next asks Helen to marry him immediately with one of the many judges in his family officiating. In an attempt to ending things, Helen says she has Faulkner's syndrome (a fictitious illness Helen invented) and that her condition is hopeless. Undeterred, Davis insists on being married, but is interrupted by an urgent phone call from his office. Due to an emergency in Myanmar, Davis needs to leave immediately, but vows to call her as soon as he returns. Back in the present, Helen explains that she never heard from Davis again after that night and that she hid the engagement ring in her cash register. Just as Helen decides to leave the airport, Davis arrives.

After som awkward hellos, Davis and Helen go into Joe's office for some privacy. As Brian, Roy, Antonio, and Casey try to listen at the office door, Joe returns and they try to distract him. Meanwhile in Joe's office, Davis admits that he's engaged to someone else. Furious, Helen becates him. When he asks for his grandmother's engagement ring back Helen can't remove it as it is stuck. To grease it up, Helen and Davis head to the kitchen, but Brian, Roy, Antonio, and Casey subtly warn her that Joe is in there. Helen then tries to hurry Davis out, but he won't leave without the ring, so Helen uses Roy's hair to grease her hand and slips the ring right off. Davis exits the airport just as Joe enters, but moments later Davis reenters because he doesn't like how things ended with Helen. The two are confused and when they ask Helen what's going on she yells "Faulkner's" and pretends to faint.

Quotes[]

  • Joe Hackett - "Now? You want me to fly to Boston just to pick up some towels?"
Helen Hackett - ""Just some towels"? They're not "just some towels". Those are...monogrammed towels...with initials on 'em. Our initials. Big "H", little "J", little "H". Those towels are a symbol."
Joe Hackett - "A symbol of what?"
Helen Hackett - "A symbol... Well, if I have to spell it out to you, then what's it all about baby?!"

  • Davis Lynch - "Come here, come here, come here! It's almost time. Alright, you see Times Square? Well, keep your eyes on the electronic billboard. Three, two, one."
Helen Chapel - ""Helen, you're my love, you're my life, you're my everything. Knicks trounce Bulls"."
Davis Lynch - "No, no, no. Just the first part."

  • Davis Lynch - "Helen, Helen, are you alright?"
Helen Chapel - "Am I alright? No! I am not alright. I have a condition."
Davis Lynch - "What are you talking about? What condition?"
Helen Chapel - "It's, um..." [glances at a nearby book] "Faulkner's syndrome. It's one of your really bad syndromes. Um, trust me. You don't want to be married to someone with Faulkner's syndrome. Or, as we call it, The Big F."
Davis Lynch - "Helen, nothing in the world is going to stop me from marrying you. I'll get you the best doctor in the country."
Helen Chapel - "No! See I've already seen the top Faulkner man. Doctor, uh..." [glances at another nearby book] "Dickens! Top, top Faulkner man. And he says that it's hopeless."

  • Helen Hackett - "I mean, do you have any idea how much this man loves me? I mean, the thought of marrying me was probably the only thing that kept him alive all those months."
Antonio Scarpacci - "My, don't we think a little bit of ourselves."

  • Casey Davenport - "What is a matter with you people? You're missing the real point. I mean, nobody has asked you the important question here: What happened to that big-ass ring?"

  • Helen Hackett - "I read what happened to you in the paper. Are you alright?"
Davis Lynch - "It was really terrible. I wasn't free to leave, I wasn't allowed outside contact, and for the last three months I think the chief was just going through the motions."

Trivia[]

  • This episode features the return of Davis Lynch, who was last seen in A Decent Proposal.
  • This episode reveals that Davis has been trapped, under house arrest in Rangoon for the last 16 months. Rangoon (now known as Yangon) is the largest city in Myanmar (formerly Burma). His detainment would have coincided with a period of political unrest in Myanmar between the duly elected National League for Democracy party and the Myanmese military junta during the 1990s.
  • Joe refers to his penis as "Little J".
  • This episode features a flash back to the events immediately following Joe and Helen's engagement in Whose Wife Is It Anyway?.
  • During the flashback, Davis mentions that there was talk from his family about him possibly being gay because he was still single in his thirties. This may be a reference to the Seinfeld episode The Outing.
  • Although credited as part of the main cast, Rebecca Schull as Fay Cochran does not appear in this episode.
  • This episode is currently unavailable for streaming in the United States likely due to the music rights for "Isn't It Romantic?", which was played by a string duet for Helen in Davis Lynch's apartment.
  • This episode has been low ranked among Wings fans, partly due to the abrupt ending but mainly due to Helen's lying her way out of situation, which was largely considered a one-joke episode. The producers got multiple letters saying there ought to have been one more episode to feature Davis, where Helen comes clean about why she chose Joe over him.
