Mae Hackett was the mother of Joe Hackett and Brian Hackett. She was played by Valri Jackson in It's Not the Thought, It's the Gift and This Old House and by Barbara Babcock in Mother Wore Stripes.
Bio[]
Not much is known about Mae Hackett's past or where she hails from. However, both his sons were born and raised on Nantucket (Joe Blows (Part 1)).
In the early 1970s, Donald and Mae moved with their two sons from their apartment to a house on 427 Madaket Way (This Old House). After years of a troubled marriage, Mae announced to him she was leaving and ran out on the family and moved to Phoenix (Mother Wore Stripes/Burnin' Down the House (Part 2)).
After leaving her family, Mae worked at a bank in Sacramento where she embezzled $850,000 dollars. When she was found guilty, she was sentenced to 8 years in the California State Penitentiary where she worked in the laundry (Mother Wore Stripes).
Years later, Brian saw her on TV when she was hit by a golf ball from President Gerald Ford in Palms Springs. Brian was able to track her down and invited her to come to Nantucket without telling Joe. When she arrived, she revealed she served time in prison. Joe was initially standoffish and stormed out of the house. However, when Mae found them at the airport, they were able to reconcile (Mother Wore Stripes).

- Mae left her family around 1973, 18 years before her reemergence in 1991. Joe was born sometime in or around 1960 (2 Good 2 Be 4 Gotten) and Brian was born sometime in or around 1961 (The Gift (Part 1)) placing them both between age 11-13 when she left.
- Mae was rediscovered by Brian when he saw her get hit in the head with a golf ball on TV (Mother Wore Stripes). Casey similarly rediscovered her estranged husband Stuart when she saw him hit in the head with a baseball on TV (Love Overboard).
