Roy Biggins Jr. (better known as "R.J." or "Roy Junior") was the only child of Sylvia and Roy Biggins Senior. He was played by Abraham Benrubi.

Bio[]

R.J. was the only son of Roy Senior and Sylvia Biggins and a Nantucket native. As a child, R.J. had a good relationship with his father as they both shared a love of sports. Their bond only grew stronger after Sylvia's "death" (There's Always Room for Cello).

Starting at age 8, R.J. abided by training programs his father prescribed to become more aggressive and better at football. In 1990, R.J. was made the starting defensive tackle of the Siasconset High School football team.

Because we wanted to learn to play the cello, R.J. lied and told his father that he "horny for Helen". When Helen found out about the alleged crush, she spoken to R.J. about and he came out as gay to her. Excited by sharing his sexual orientation for the first time, R.J. wanted to tell everyone. Although Helen wanted to be supportive, she discouraged R.J. from coming out to his father. R.J. agrees to not tell Roy, but still is telling everyone else and even begins planning a Gay Pride Parade for Nantucket. When R.J. came out to his father, Roy fainted. When he woke up, he reacted with anger and denial. To settle the issue, Roy challenged R.J. to a game of one-on-one basketball with R.J.'s sexual orientation at stake. After of hours of playing, R.J. won (There's Always Room for Cello) but there was a rift between father and son that led to them not speaking to each other for six years (Sons and Lovers).

In 1990, R.J. traveled with his friends to Gainesville to see the Grateful Dead in concert instead of spending Christmas on Nantucket with his dad.

After graduating from high school, R.J. moved to Boston to attend college and eventually passed the bar exam. He also met and began dating Luke Johnson (Sons and Lovers).

On February 29th, 1996, Helen ran into R.J. in Boston and invited him to Roy's 12th birthday. Roy enjoyed spending time with R.J. as long as he didn't talk about being gay at all. Things escalated when Luke, R.J.'s boyfriend joined the party. When Roy started a fight, R.J. and Luke stormed out. After Helen berated Roy for his behavior, Roy rushed to the airport to apologize and reconcile.

Trivia[]

  • R.J. is first mentioned in A Stand Up Kind of Guy when he put a magnet on the metal plate on the back of Roy's head.
  • R.J. was 17-years-old in 1990 meaning that he was born in either 1972 or 1973. At age 17, he also had a 19 inch neck.
  • In Fay There, Georgy Girl, Roy mentions that his wife left him around February 1976. This would make R.J. 3 or 4 year old when his parents separated. However, based on other comments from Roy in There's Always Room for Cello and A Terminal Christmas, it is possible that this was not the only or last time Sylvia left him.
